Stevie Smith lands on the podium at UCI World Cup #3
Smith 4th on WC #3 UCI | Leogang, AT - After an impressive start to the 2011 World Cup Season Devinci Global Racing’s Steve Smith has piloted his Wilson to his first podium finish of the season, a 4th place finish at round #3 in Leogang, Austria. The podium finish comes at the venue, which will be used for the 2012 World Championships.

Qualifying ran Saturday with both Devinci Global racing riders earning excellent start positions for Sunday’s main event. With over 250 riders attempting to qualify for Sunday’s final the field was cut to 80 riders with Smith in 3rd and teammate George Brannigan in 25th.

Riders awoke to a surprise on Sunday as the course had changed dramatically due to heavy rain overnight. The final track conditions would be unknown until moments before race start causing havoc among team mechanics over tire selection. As the race unfolded, the first podium worthy time came from World Cup leader Greg Minnarr who shaved over 2 seconds of previous leader Sam Hills time. With just 7 more riders to come everyone was gunning to unseat Greg.

As Steve’s run unfolded he had some issues as he passed through the first split in 22nd place, but he battled back in the technical sections to eventually finish 4th place with an impressive lower section of the course.

“I made a big mistake up top, but I was able to look past this and put a good run together. The track was running amazing from about half way down and I am really pumped to come away with a podium,” said Smith

I am very pleased with the first podium of the new program and it comes at a great time heading into back-to-back events in North America. It’s a great confidence builder heading back to St Anne. - Gabe Fox, Sales and Marketing Manager Cycles Devinci
